concert for... yusof ishak?
last saturday, my folks and i stayed home to watch concert for diana. it's a concert that features almost all genres of music - think opera, rock, pop, etc, to commemorate the passing princess diana. no prize for guessing the organizers, her 2 beloved sons - princes william and harry.
its really amazing how people of different generations could sit together watching a concert, and enjoyed it thoroughly! and this comes in question, why is singapore not able to pull off such events? just look at the mediacorp's countdown at vivocity. i disagree with others who totally dismiss the local scene and that singapore has no talent. for one, i personally thought local bands like electrico and great spy experiment are pretty good. and how about popular bands like eic and timmy? (though i dont feel much for them). and there are also some others who made it overseas, like corinne may and olivia ong.
the whole countdown was pretty much of a joke. its almost a yearly event for taufikbatisah to make his "grand" appearance as the singaporeanidol. but what i do not understand is the "grand" appearance, cos honestly what happened to him the whole year, other than being the spokesperson of 7-11? we dont know. or at least i don't. and there were some others that came from livethedream - pardon me if i've gotten the title wrong, i hardly watch mediacorp channels and ive not watched a single episode! and the dancing jadeseah? quoting joy - if she ever dance like that in zouk, nobody would go near her.
objectively speaking, i also understand why mediacorp has to get them, especially since they are kinda affiliated to mediacorp. it could be just a point that mediacorp's trying to make - "we create celebrities", especially since these people hit stardom through the tiny goggle box. also, how can mediacorp compete with the princes in terms of budget?
maybe temasek holdings can play philantrophist and come up with the next big thing with a big bang.
after all, isnt lky one of the fore-fathers of our young republic?

thanks! it hit upon me first when i was watching the 2008 countdown at taiwan, but i brushed it aside till i watched concert for diana. i thought that it somehow showed how irrelevant mediacorp has become to the local audience.
it would be lovely to hear from someone of a different opinion, or simply to add on what ive missed!
