Feeling chatty

So Singapore won the bid to the 2010 Youth Olympics! On the news, someone enthusiastically said he would volunteer to help out for this event. I thought, "Wow! I wonder what's his motivation since many people are rather indifferent here."

There's been some EdisonChen scandals in HongKong that had all my friends discussing. What's the allure of tabloids and gossips? Escapism from our own (mundane) lives? Envy? Boredom?

I wonder if you would buy a magazine if along with it comes a pretty notebook? Female collaborated with Paul&Joe last year to come up with a pretty babyblue calendar/notebook - i bought it without a blink.

Recently August gives away GAP's striped notebook - which yours truly have because my class worked with GAP for an advertising project. Sometimes Elle gives out free bags, makeup pouches and vials of tester perfume. I bet dozens of other publications do that too.

Nothing new here. But the decision-making mechanism behind our purchases intrigues me. Would you buy the magazine for the freebie?

Many of my friends (and myself included) are graduating. How is everyone feeling? Fear, apprehension, excitement or a mix of all of that?

The end of school! Something which has been part of our lives for the past two decades. It's like starting over again - in a new place, under different conditions. And this is no 100metre sprint. It's a marathon. Do people get jobs they like? Do people get jobs that pay - but they don't like. What are their considerations? To save up for their weddings eventually? To buy a flat? To travel the world? To raise a kid?

Choices - they permutate our lives. Hence we all get to travel different paths. No one path is the same.

If you are working now, are you happy? If you're graduating, what will you do?

concert for... yusof ishak?

last saturday, my folks and i stayed home to watch concert for diana. it's a concert that features almost all genres of music - think opera, rock, pop, etc, to commemorate the passing princess diana. no prize for guessing the organizers, her 2 beloved sons - princes william and harry.

its really amazing how people of different generations could sit together watching a concert, and enjoyed it thoroughly! and this comes in question, why is singapore not able to pull off such events? just look at the mediacorp's countdown at vivocity. i disagree with others who totally dismiss the local scene and that singapore has no talent. for one, i personally thought local bands like electrico and great spy experiment are pretty good. and how about popular bands like eic and timmy? (though i dont feel much for them). and there are also some others who made it overseas, like corinne may and olivia ong.

the whole countdown was pretty much of a joke. its almost a yearly event for taufikbatisah to make his "grand" appearance as the singaporeanidol. but what i do not understand is the "grand" appearance, cos honestly what happened to him the whole year, other than being the spokesperson of 7-11? we dont know. or at least i don't. and there were some others that came from livethedream - pardon me if i've gotten the title wrong, i hardly watch mediacorp channels and ive not watched a single episode! and the dancing jadeseah? quoting joy - if she ever dance like that in zouk, nobody would go near her.

objectively speaking, i also understand why mediacorp has to get them, especially since they are kinda affiliated to mediacorp. it could be just a point that mediacorp's trying to make - "we create celebrities", especially since these people hit stardom through the tiny goggle box. also, how can mediacorp compete with the princes in terms of budget?

maybe temasek holdings can play philantrophist and come up with the next big thing with a big bang.
after all, isnt lky one of the fore-fathers of our young republic?

p.s. for starhub cable subscribers, you can catch concert for diana at starworld channel (channel 18). alternatively, you can buy a dvd set from "all good record stores".

We wanna sell books in SMU!

We start school next week in SMU but there's not much channels for getting rid of last semester's textbooks. MSN? Limited reach. School book shop? Why give them the commission? (We so miss Verts!) As such, theFadboy has set up a "I just want to sell my books in SMU!!!" group on Facebook.

No one does business without profit, they say, but the Fad people just want to make a difference. After all, it is of no cost to us to set up a group. We leave the rest of the negotiations to you. And there's everything to gain for every one of the diligent students (and savvy IT-adopters) who covet textbooks at affordable price.

All hail Facebook.

So help spread the word!

2007... The Recap!

It is now the 31st of Dec. In just a few more hours we will be at the end of a wonderful 2007 and welcoming a fabulous 2008!

Let us recap some of the best times of the Wonderful 2007!

1. Best Movie - 300

TheFadpeople fell inlove with the show (no it was not the size of those muscles!). The fight scenes, the love and the hatred.. oh, and the most liked like in the show:

"How do you know when there are too many arrows, when it turns the sky dark!"

If you still have not caught the show, do watch it online!!! (or borrow a DVD!)

2. Best Remembered Political Issue - Prime Minister's Pay higher than US President

And it is going much higher! With our ministers' pay pegged to the highest paying jobs (ignoring the widening income gap between the lower and higher income), our government decided that it is still ok to increase the pay of our PM, SM and MM.

Even after the huge outcry, the PM decided only to delay the increase (despite the current turmoil in the industry)... It seems like the social divide will only be increasing!

3. Best Bimbotic Line in the Papers - Miss Teen USA (South Caroline)

When asked why 1/5 of American couldn't find The United State on the map, this beautiful lady really stunned with her ans. Watch to find out!

Greatest nation in the world? Scary... Haha...

4. Best Song to irritate someone with - Umbrella by Rihanna

ella, ella, eh, eh, eh.... yes, eh eh eh.. it gets, ella.., irritating with all this repeating ella ella eh eh.... We just could not understand why it got popular! Ella ella ella eh eh!

Just click to see the lyrics! or here to see the music video!!

5. Best Time of the Year - when theFadpeople was born...

We know, this is shameless... but to us, the best time was when the idea of theFadpeople was born followed by the very difficult time towards revamping the website. It has been a turbulant 6months. Ups and Downs.. Laughters, quarrels.. Heartaches and sleepless nights! But it has all been worth the time, effort, sweat and tears!

Well, our old site is still available @ http://thefadrecollections.blogspot.com/. TheFadpeople is grateful and extremely happy that you, our dear dear dear readers, are still around to be reading this.

Thank you for following us since our start till now, our new beginning!

We wish our readers, A great coming 2008!!!

Horoscope 2008

After all the eggnog and binging with much festive cheer, we hope you've had a fabulous Christmas full of love. As 2007 winds down to an end, we look forward to a greater 2008. For a little ju-ju, here's a peek into the future.

Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19)
No sign more than you appreciates being prepared: you have a long-range view of life, and you plan for a rainy day. This year not only encourages you to prepare but also makes it doable. During the next 12 months, two wonderful changes will make a dramatic difference in your life. For the first time in 12 years, lucky Jupiter is in your sign -- this means that you'll be lucky! The gods are with you for 2008, bringing you excellent opportunities. Meanwhile, back at the drawing board, you see exactly what you want to achieve -- it's almost within your grasp. Now is the time to further your training, travel or do whatever you can to enhance your chances for your destined success, which is about two years away -- it's all up to you!

Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18)
You are in the midst of an unusual eight-month transition of Mars (this last occurred in the '70s), which spurs you to work harder than ever before. You're working hard because partners are contributing less to your coffers and you want to clean up debt. Privately, you're exploring your spiritual realm; as you do, you'll be surprised to discover what a cool person you are! You'll be less self-critical and appreciate your good qualities. This increased self-love is not narcissistic, though; it's more of a quiet confidence.

Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20)
This year you're finally in the game -- you're a player! The only dark cloud on the horizon is partnerships. This is a testing time for close relationships: those that are meant to last will endure. Ironically, your popularity with others increases enormously. In the bedroom, lusty Mars guarantees hot sex! You feel playful, flirtatious, prankish and full of fun. Indulge yourself with some strappy stilettos --you've worked for the right to strut your stuff! Life will flow easily this year: you feel generous and tolerant, and you're “thinking big.”

Aries (March 21 – April 19)
Most recently, you've been pounding your head against the wall, looking for ways to express your creative self -- especially professionally. In a few years, you'll make your real debut in the world, so you'll have to put your house in order. Now it's time to face some serious hard work -- your effectiveness as a human being will be tested. Take care of your health -- your body is your tool. Be patient with domestic conflict and chaos during the first six months of 2008. Your professional efforts will generate wonderful results because, for the first time since 1996, moneybags Jupiter is at the top of your chart. (Yee-haw!) Your career will be wonderfully blessed. Expect to expand in areas of publishing, higher education, dealings with foreign countries, the law, medicine and the media. Heads, you win -- and heads it is!

Taurus (April 20 – May 20)
You're entering one of the most auspicious years you've had in a long time. Why? You're an Earth sign, and this year both Jupiter and Saturn are in Earth signs, which bodes well for you. (This is good news!) You now have a strong sense of who you are -- and who you aren't -- but that deeper question “What do I want to be when I grow up?” still lingers. You will seriously address this in 2008: many of you will go back to school, further your training or education or travel to broaden your experience; some of you will have increased responsibilities with children. Whatever happens, the gods are with you because both Jupiter and Saturn are “helping” you -- that's why you feel increased energy, especially intellectually. You're more confident in all your dealings with others -- and, believe me, it shows!

Gemini (May 21 – June 20)
For the first time since 1978–1980, Saturn is forcing you to focus on where you live. (We're not talking new duvet covers or bathroom towels; this is the real deal.) You need to secure your external home (vis-à-vis where you live), as well as your inner home (your relationship with yourself and your family). It's a good year to pursue any kind of therapy or self-help to achieve this. It's also why you want to buy a home or renovate where you live -- you'll work hard at earning money (and spending it!) to do this. Fortunately, moneybags Jupiter will bring on inheritances, loans, mortgages, gifts and goodies. You will also benefit from the wealth of your partner. And your sex drive will be super-amped this year!

Cancer (June 21 – July 22)
Mars is the planet of sexual energy and aggression. Every two years, it stays in each sign for about seven weeks. But thanks to a celestial quirk, it will stay in your sign for seven months (instead of weeks) at the end of 2007 and the beginning of 2008. (You're PowerPoint on steroids!) You'll swagger with ease and have tons of drive, energy and enthusiasm. But you might overwhelm others, so be aware of this until it moves on in mid-May. This increased energy will help you juggle residential or job changes that are likely to happen sometime over the next two years; it will also help you deal with partners and close friends. Partnerships will be a big deal in 2008, and the benefits will apply to personal and professional relationships. Many singles will hook up, and some of you will get involved with someone older or more established. (Great -- that means they can pick up the tab for dinner!)

Leo(July 23 – Aug. 22)
Externally, you appear more focused on money and possessions, and this is true: you're giving much thought to how you earn -- and spend -- money. But underlying this is the search for a meaningful value system -- in other words, what really matters in life. (You never see a hearse pulling a U-Haul.) This year heralds wonderful possibilities for your health and job. In fact, you can improve your job so much this year that it will make your head spin. Your evil boss will get fired -- or hired elsewhere. And if your job doesn't improve, you'll get a wonderful new job -- you can count on it!

Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22)
You'll experience more changes this year than any other sign. You've gone through a lot of loss, but you've triumphed on your journey through the dark night of the soul. This year, it's your turn for romance, vacations, partying and all that fun stuff. (Yay!) Explore the arts and get in touch with your creative talent. Enjoy playful activities with children as well. You will definitely take a vacation. It's all about pleasure and enjoyment! (Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.) But your increased confidence could provoke conflict or competitiveness with someone. You'll have to handle this skillfully. And, hey, who's having all the fun this year? You are! Of course, you will work, but this year you'll have an opportunity to cultivate more joy than you've experienced in over a decade.

Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22)
You need beauty and harmony around you. Squalor and fighting can bring you down. Jupiter is the largest planet and represents wealth, good fortune, expansion and joy. This year, Jupiter sits in the part of your chart that rules home, family, real estate and your private world. Your wealth and assets will increase through your home or real estate. Relations with family will be lovely. Ironically, while all of these wonderful things are going on, you'll let go of whatever is no longer relevant in your life. Don't think of letting go as loss; think of it as liberation. You're lightening your load so that you can better enjoy your world.

Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21)
You stepped into the world in 1999 and became increasingly aware of your level of influence. Although you muddled through changes when your partner lost a job, your confidence grew as you approached 2005–2007 -- this was when you clearly saw what was working in your life and what wasn't. You are strong with your success now and know what you're capable of -- and so do others! Until now, your focus has been on achieving personal success. In 2008, however, there's a subtle shift: your challenge is to learn how to work through -- and with --others. How can you be a member of the tribe yet maintain your independence and integrity? This is your challenge. Fortunately, lucky Jupiter will make you happier because your thoughts will be more positive. Your attitude in 2008 is one of optimism -- your plans for the future are larger and more expansive. Travel and new studies will make life more interesting.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21)
This is the year you've been waiting for! Your world is looking so bright, you're gonna need to wear shades. Of course, you have to keep track of your success -- and what better way to do this than by counting money? Yup: the cheque is in the mail. Count on earning more money this year than you've earned in over a decade. You are hot to trot. Work-related travel is possible. Major expenditures are also likely. And get this: Mars is going to boost your sex drive. How can one sign have it all? Be patient over disputes concerning shared property -- you'll get what's yours.

Chestnut roasting...

Come every December, I seem to live in my own wonderland. Perhaps it's the cold, the grey skies.. Or the magic cast by Christmas carols playing everywhere. Or the soft orange glow of Christmas trees. Whatever it is, come every December, I'd bring out the 1.7m Christmas tree at set it up in my house. I would write a list of presents to buy for friends and family. Then I would go on to organise a little Christmas party and excitedly await the coming of 24th December, where we would tinkle the wine glasses, exchange beautifully wrapped gifts and stroll by the pool playing with fireworks or sitting by the TV watching Home Alone (again).

What's there not to like about Christmas?

I've loved Christmas since I was a child. The earliest memory was hanging a sock by my bed at age six and waking up to a bag of chocolates and candies. I spotted a price tag on the chocolates, bought from 7-11, and asked my dad if Santa bought his presents from convenient stores. I also commented that Santa was a cheapo, buying me cheap candies!

It did not really make sense because I thought Santa made his presents in North Pole and rode on the reindeers all the way here to deliver. And worse still, my sis and I got the same gifts. Just different colours.

When I was eight, I stayed up to catch Santa. It was 2am before I fell asleep and when I woke at in the morning, I found presents by my bed. I asked my parents how could Santa travel the entire world in a single night and give everyone a gift? You see, I was really intrigued by the Santa Claus concept. I wanna see him in person!

When I was ten, I held my first Christmas party - and invited my sister and cousins to it. I was a one-man girl-show then... donating my own toys and books as gifts, thinking of the games to play, wrapping presents to hand out to those who attended the party, and pestered my mom to cook a Christmas feast. THAT was how much I love Christmas.

As I got older, I became my baby sister's Santa. There was a year I did not buy her a present so from my SoftToy cupboard, I took out this ugly rabbit which I thought she had never seen before and gave it to her. In the morning when she woke up, she threw the toy away and asked me why Santa gave her the exact rabbit that I already had. This embarrassing story is still being told during our Christmas dinner every year. Thank you very much.

As you can see, there isn't a holiday I love more than Christmas. And it will not change this year. I'll still have a Christmas party. I'd still play the same carols album over dinner. I'd still go find the many versions of "Last Christmas" and "White Christmas" (both my favourite!) to compile into CDs. I'd still watch Love Actually (which to me, is the BEST Christmas show ever!) and I'll still be a Santarina. Just that now, I don't have to sneak into my sister's room to unload all the presents without fearing I'd wake her. We do it after the Christmas dinner.

So how are you spending your Christmas this year?
